I soon realized after picking up these cabinets that I had everything I needed for a sideboard that the dining area was in need of. The two drawbacks I had was the cabinets were too short for a sideboard and too deep for where I wanted to place them. I knew I will have to modify them in height and depth and this was doable. The width however was perfect when I put both together side by side.
Below are the steps I followed.
Step 1 To solve the depth drawback, I removed the piece of board at the back of the cabinets and using a jig saw, I trimmed about 2 inches from the back.
Step 2 I put the 2 cabinets together side by side with screws to create one large cabinet and replaced the back board pieces.
Step 3. To address the height drawback, I built the bottom part using the width and depth measurements of 2 cabinets that have now become one.
Step4. I added the 8″ legs and my height was just right.
Step 5. After I had screwed all parts together, I added trim and painted the piece white except for the doors
Step 6. I Interchanged the doors so that the glass doors will be in the center.
Step7. I painted the doors gold and stenciled in the white areas.
Step8. I used corner molding to frame out the top in preparation for the mirror mosaic.
Step 9 Using left over broken mirrors that I had picked up from Craigslist when whole, I used a hammer and broke the mirrors into smaller sizes.
Step10. Using mirror adhesive I attached the pieces to the top of the side board keeping the broken pieces as close as possible and filling in the gaps with smaller pieces as much as possible.
Step 11. I mixed some un sanded grout per manufacturer’s instructions and applied it to the top.
Step 12. I place the sideboard along the wall at the dining area.
Step 13. I touched up where needed and attached the crystal knobs and finished it to the beautiful masterpiece you see.
